Paige Donovan is an ambitious college graduate who aspires to reach the top of the corporate ladder. She’s climbing fast when given the promotion of a lifetime at a prestigious fashion magazine in New York City. Her bright future comes to an unexpected halt after news of her father’s death. She inherits his old cabin in the Colorado Rockies and just when she thinks her luck couldn’t get any worse, she has a car accident in the mountains and awakens in the small, remote community of Black River.
Soon she’s engulfed in the mystical world of Varulv—wolves descended from 12th century Scandinavia and blessed by Norse gods with the ability to appear human. Paige is desperate to return home, but never expects to fall for her rescuer, Riley Gray, a charming young werewolf from England who offers her an alternate future with his pack.
Now she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

My body protested from the exertion. Pain shot through my back and legs, but I ignored it. I had no idea where I would go. I just knew I had to find other people. I heard Riley yell my name and turned my head to see him running after me.

A scream of horror came from my throat, as if a wolf was chasing me. "Help! Someone help me!"

I heard Riley gaining on me, his footsteps hard and swift against the ground. I tried to scream again, but my voice cut off when something hoisted me into the air. It grabbed me and knocked the wind out of my lungs. I looked down at the grass, and it was a blur of green. My body bounced, and I realized I was upside down. Riley carried me over his shoulder while he ran.

In less than a minute, he dropped me onto the sofa in their living room. I felt disoriented and dizzy. I blinked rapidly to get my vision in focus. The twins stood in front of me, Riley breathing hard and Quinn just watching me. Her eyes were back to their human color, but I saw distress behind them. The deep scratches on Riley's face had already healed, revealing his smooth skin. That is not normal.

April Bostic is a New Jersey-based romance author who enjoys unleashing her creativity and letting her imagination run wild. Her love of romance books inspired her to become not just a reader, but also a writer. In December 2008, she self-published her first novel, a contemporary romance with a supernatural twist entitled "A Rose to the Fallen". Her first short story, "Right Here, Right Now", released in January 2012, is an erotic romance with a dash of S&M. The following year, she released two more short stories: a romantic urban fantasy inspired by the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche entitled "Eros, My Love", and a sexy romantic comedy entitled "Love Addiction". After five years, released her second novel , "The Howling Heart", in August 2013, a paranormal romance that delves into the mystical world of werewolves and Norse gods.

I read this in one sitting, it was so easy to fly through it.
The story, even for a shifter story was a little strange to begin with.

Paige is just given a promotion in her home town of new York, when her dad passes away, knocking her for six.  He leaves her a cabin in Black River that they used to visit when she was little.  Her mum immediately wants her to sell it, but Paige decides to go and visit it after having dreams about the wolf pup she met in the forest when she was little.

I suppose the next 50 pages is a little weird.  Paige cant not see the hunkiness that is Riley, but within days shed made the choice to stay in Black River with him as his mate.  This was the only time it felt a little bit of a long shot storyline, but the rest that follows is actually good to read.

Of course the rest isn't smooth sailing and some parts where you're holding your breath, a part when you're sad, a part when you're surprised...
and no cliffhanger! This seems to be a standalone novel, and its refreshing to read as most nowadays try to be a series.

A good, quick and easy to read book, with a feel good finish.  Mostly a boy meets girl book which just happens to be around shifters.

  1. Thank you for participating in my tour. I look forward to reading your review.

  2. This sounds like a unique and fascinating paranormal story. I loved the excerpt. Very exciting.

  3. Sounds great! From your written works, it looks like you must have an interest in mythology. Do you have any mythologically-themed works in progress?

    1. I might write a sequel to The Howling Heart, and if I do, I'll be adding another Norse god to the story. He's one many are familiar with. :)

  4. Sounds like a great read!!
